Data Migration

Data migration can be risky and complicated.  Yet it is something that can’t be avoided.  Your data is the most valuable part of your ERP or any system.

KALM diffuses the riskiness of data migration.  Whatever shape, form, or location your data or schema may be today, we know how to migrate it.  Utilizing a proven methodology and toolset, KALM plans, migrates, and verifies your data migration to assure 1) no data loss and 2) no business disruption.

Allow us to give you some insight into how we ensure a smooth data migration.

Pre-migration preparation

A successful data migration starts with completing some preparatory steps.  KALM starts with understanding your current data ecosystem.  We take inventory of the source and target systems and repositories.  We take note of the data formats and the processes and cadence that that data is a part of.    We then develop a migration roadmap with a mapping of the existing data landscape to what will be the new landscape.  Priority, timeline, and target locations will all be defined and planned.

Data inspection

Prior to initiating any migration, we complete an inspection of your data.  This involved a detailed analysis of the data to be migrated.  The objective of this analysis is to assess the quality of the data and identify duplications, data integrity gaps, and any unexpected or anomalous data.  It is imperative to understand where anomalies may exist today to understand, at the post migration testing, whether the data migration was successful in mirroring the data and its relationships that exist pre-migration.

Migration design

It’s time to plan the tactical steps of the migration.  This is where the preparation pays off.  We take our learnings from the preparations steps to plan out the needed data de-duplication, cleansing, migration, mapping, and validation processes.  We select the most suitable tools to employ – both to complete the migration as well as to monitor the migration.

Execution

When execution time arrives, it is well planned, monitored, and de-risked.  The first step in execution is to backup your data.  This is an imperative step to de-risk the process.  The next step is to initiate the migration using the proper tools suited to your data types and ecosystem.

Testing

A migration is not done until a thorough testing protocol has been conducted.  KALM monitors the migration as it occurs – not only at the conclusion of the process.  This allows us to identify any issue when it occurs so we can stop and resolve the issue.  When the migration is concluded, we run a battery of reconciliation and integrity checks to assure that data has been fully migrated and in the same shape and form as it was in the pre migration data ecosystem.
